1. What opportunities for project based learning currently exist within your department?
There are many options for project based learning in foreign language. Students can create family trees, imagine they've gone on a trip to a francophone country, imagine they are making a recipe and all the aspects that go with it (planning for it, shopping, baking, etc), put on a fashion show or art show, etc.
2. What opportunities does project based learning provide for our students
Project based learning is student directed and motivational. Students like being handed the opportunity to explore and learn on their own. In the end, they have a result that they are proud of. It is something they can keep and as a result, they end up retaining the information much more effectively.
3. What potential weaknesses exist in this approach to education?
The weaknesses are that students are working independently and sometimes lack motivation to work on their own. You have to trust that they're doing their work, which isn't always the case. Another weakness is that you have to be sure that students understand how to look for reliable websites, or students may look to the internet and find sources that are not the most reliable.
5.2 Teaching Strategy: Students as presenters
There are multiple opportunities for our students to present their knowledge. It can be the culmination of a project based learning project, an after reading activity or an assessment. Either way, technology can be used to enhance a student's ability to present their knowledge.
5.4 Glogging
I found that this glog took me a while to do, but I am happy with the end result. I designed it with French IV honors in mind. I am currently designing this course, and plan to do a unit on fairy tales, specifically Beauty and the Beast, early on. My students will read the original version of Beauty and the Beast in French and then we will watch both the classic French film by Jean Cocteau as well as the Disney version. I tried to design a glog that addressed all three. I may use this as a project to tie up the unit before they write a final paper on it. It seems to be a useful tool, and fun to do too!
